German MP: Hungary should be thanked for protecting EU external border
Berlin, January 27 (MTI) – Instead of criticism, Hungary should receive thanks for protecting the European Union’s external borders which also protects Germany, Bundestag member Erika Steinbach said in an interview with public media.
After 43 years as a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Steinbach has left the CDU over disagreement with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s migrant policies and now sits as an independent member of the Bundestag.
Germany violated EU regulations to Hungary’s detriment when in early September 2015 it opened the borders for “uncontrolled migration”, she said. “Of the hundreds of thousands of migrants .. few were genuine refugees,” she added.
Commenting on criticism of Hungary in the German press, she said German media workers tend to be left-wing and they criticise Hungary because it has a conservative government, and many politicians believe what they read in the press without double-checking the information. Baseless criticism is ungrateful towards the Hungarians who did a great deal for Germany at the time of reunification and the fall of the Iron Curtain, she added.
