Budapest, September 23 (MTI) – The prime minister, president and the house speaker at a ceremony in Parliament on Friday presented high state honours to Hungarian athletes who won medals at the 2016 Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Our medal-winning athletes have become symbols of our nation; they are our heroes from whom we can learn how to defeat adversaries in a fair battle,” Viktor Orbán said in his address.
“Every time you step onto the winners’ podium it is a magnificent and glorious feeling to be Hungarian; this is what bonds us all, all the way from Transcarpathia to southern Slovakia, from Austria to the United States,” he said.
Hungarian athletes fetched 8 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals in the Rio Olympic Games, putting Hungary 12th on the table of medals.
In the Paralympic Games, Hungarian athletes won one gold, 8 silver and 9 bronze medals.
