Hungarian swimmers: one gold, and two bronze medals at the closing day of the EU championship
Hungarian swimmers won three medals at the closing day of the European Swimming Championships in Berlin finishing sixth overall on the medal table. On Sunday, Dávid Verrasztó won gold medal in men’s 400 m medley, which was Hungary’s eightieth European championship gold medal in the history of the sport. Katinka Hosszú won bronze in women’s 200 m butterfly and the men’s team also won bronze in 4X100 m freestyle relay.
Head-coach László Kiss praised the team’s performance in Berlin: “I regret that the Youth Olympics in Nanjing coincided with the European championship, because Liliána Szilagyi’s results in Nanjing would have been translated to medals in Berlin too.” “Katinka Hosszú was phenomenal by winning three gold one silver and one bronze medals” said the head-coach.
“It was the right decision to let her compete in 17 events at the Hungarian national championship as the experience gave her the opportunity to model her Berlin strategy. Hats off to her coach Shane Tusup for improving Katinka’s breast and backstroke style immensely,” said Kiss.
Boglárka Kapás can’t complain either by winning one silver and two bronze medals in yesterday’s events.
But there is no rest for the athletes. On Monday, Katinka Hosszú, Dániel Gyurta, Evelyn Verrasztó, Dávid Verrasztó and Gergő Kis fly to Doha to compete at the World Cup series starting August 27.
