Economy minister: Economic growth to offset losses in payroll tax revenue

Budapest, December 1 (MTI) – Losses in tax revenue resulting from the government’s decision to cut payroll taxes next year could be partially offset by an uptick in economic growth, Economy Minister Mihály Varga said on Thursday. The government expects a GDP growth rate of more than 3 percent in 2017, Varga told parliament’s economic committee in his annual ministerial hearing. Under an agreement reached last week between the government, employers and unions, minimum wages for unskilled workers will be raised by 15 percent and for skilled workers by 25 percent in 2017. Orbán wins lawsuit against Gyurcsány’s Altus

  Budapest, December 1 (MTI) – The metropolitan court of appeal has ruled in favour of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in a lawsuit former prime minister Ferenc Gyurcsány brought against him. The ruling concerning Gyurcsány’s company, Altus, overturns the court of first instance’s ruling in Gyurcsány’s favour. Bertalan Havasi, Orbán’s press chief, told MTI on Thursday that Gyurcsány, the leader of the opposition Democratic Coalition party, had sued the premier because Orbán had questioned the legitimacy of a European Union tender won by Altus. Budapest, Tunis trade chambers sign cooperation pact

Budapest, November 2 (MTI) – The Budapest and Tunis chambers of commerce and industry signed a cooperation agreement at a Hungarian-Tunisian business forum in Budapest on Wednesday. The deal covers cooperation in agriculture, the food industry, infrastructure development, water management, renewable energy, IT and construction, Zoltán Kiss, head of the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BKIK), said at the forum organised by the BKIK and the foreign ministry. Socialist, LMP discuss opposition strategies before 2018

Budapest (MTI) – The head of the Socialist Party and the co-leader of LMP held a public discussion focusing on opposition strategies before the next general election in 2018, at the Okopolis Summer Academy, on Thursday night. In the discussion, Ákos Hadházy of LMP said that the government must be replaced in 2018, because European Union funds for Hungary will run out by 2022. Hungarian tourism sees rise in leisure travellers

Budapest, July 28 (MTI) – The proportion of “budget” leisure travellers among foreign visitors in Hungary has increased by more than 10 percentage points between 2008 and 2015, business daily Világgazdaság said on Thursday citing a study by the Association of Hungarian Hotels and Restaurants (MSZÉSZ). The study reveals that in 2008 business travellers made up 15.9 percent of Hungary’s foreign visitors while 84.1 percent of them were leisure travellers. Hungary well-prepared to care for migrants from vulnerable groups, says official

Budapest, July 28 (MTI) – Hungary is well-prepared to care for migrants belonging to vulnerable groups, including families, unaccompanied minors and people with disabilities, the state secretary for social affairs and social cohesion said on Thursday. With no EU funds available for the purpose, the related investments had to be financed from domestic resources, Károly Czibere told a press conference at the Röszke transit zone on the Serbian border. Seven migrants escape from closed S Hungary camp

Budapest, July 27 (MTI) – Five Algerian and two Moroccan migrants escaped from a detention centre in Kiskunhalas, in southern Hungary on Tuesday evening, the prime minister’s chief security advisor said on Wednesday. György Bakondi told a press conference that police have caught three of the migrants and know the whereabouts of two others. Migrants continue hunger strike at Serbia-Hungary border

Zagreb, July 27 (MTI) – Around ninety migrants have been holding a hunger strike at the Serbia-Hungary border near Horgos for the fourth consecutive day, demanding Hungary to open its border to them, an MTI correspondent reported from the site on Wednesday. According to unconfirmed reports, another hundred migrants wanted to join the protest at the Subotica reception centre early on Wednesday, but police prevented it. According to turizmusonline.hu, the air cargo of the Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport has increased by 11.3% since the beginning of the year. On Thursday the organizers are going to carry a smaller device of volume to the bridge, to perk up the night picnic with a spontaneous dance. China’s BYD to set up electric bus manufacturing plant in Hungary

Budapest, July 26 (MTI) – Chinese company BYD will set up its first European electric bus manufacturing plant and create almost 200 jobs in Komárom, in northwest Hungary, the company told MTI on Tuesday. BYD will begin hiring workers in September and plans to start production at the end of 2016. Hungarian suppliers will initially provide 30 percent of the parts for the electric buses assembled here, a ratio expected to rise to 70 percent later.
