Opposition Jobbik said on Saturday that state involvement was needed to resolve a “housing crisis” in Hungary.
The government decision to reduce VAT on home construction in brown belts represents the “watered down” version of a Jobbik proposal, deputy leader Daniel Z Karpat told an online press conference.
Jobbik supports reducing VAT to 5 percent for newly built property serving public purposes and additionally calls for a fund to be set up in order to support people unable to pay their rents, he said.
The party also proposes launching a state-backed programme to build housing to let, he said.
If the state leaves the development of the situation to market trends, then after a few months of dropping prices, rents will unavoidably start rising again, he added.
