The freight ferry service on the Danube between Esztergom, in northern Hungary, and Sturovo (Párkány), in southern Slovakia, will resume operation on Tuesday morning, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said on Facebook.
Ensuring the unimpeded flow of freight traffic across Hungary’s borders has been crucial throughout the period of restrictions imposed because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the minister said.
Lorry traffic on the Hungary-Slovakia border is always heavy, Szijjártó said, adding that this was no surprise given that Slovakia is Hungary’s second largest export market, with the annual bilateral trade turnover exceeding 10 billion euros.
He said justice ministry state secretary Pál Völner had been urging the resumption of the ferry service for weeks, noting that
it could significantly ease the burden on other border crossing points and help nearby businesses.
