Hungary’s third biggest lake to disappear? This is how the opposition wants to protect it
Opposition LMP has called on the government to immediately terminate the kayak-canoe sports centre construction project at Lake Velence, in central Hungary.
LMP co-leader Erzsébet Schmuck told an online press conference on Wednesday that the government planned to spend 43 billion forints (EUR 121m) to build the Kovács Katalin National Kayak-Canoe Academy on the lake shore while it had failed to provide 40 billion forints towards the re-cultivation of the lake.
“An important attribute of kayak-canoeing as a water sport discipline is that it requires water,” Schmuck said. “But that is exactly what is currently missing from the lake.”
The company in charge of the project, West Hungaria Bau Ltd, is building the 19,000sqm sports centre with a basement, an indoor swimming pool, a multifunctional gym room and a wellness department directly on the lake shore, Schmuck said. The project also includes building a 66-room student dormitory, she added.
