Shocking! Over 300,000 tonnes of food wasted in Hungary annually
Hungarians waste over 300,000 tonnes of food annually, representing a total value of more than 170 billion forints (EUR 480m) which translates to 18,000 forints per person, the National Food Chain Safety Office said on Friday.
Food waste is an environmental, economic and also ethical problem, the statement said.
World Food Day was established on a Hungarian proposal by the United Nations in 1979 and the event is marked for the 41st occasion this year in order to raise awareness of the issues behind poverty and hunger, and to encourage cooperation, it added.
Similarly to other European Union countries, the largest proportion of food waste in Hungary results from households throwing away food and the National Food Chain Safety Office launched a programme to highlight this issue in 2016, it said.

One area of massive waste that I have often noticed in Hungary is to do with restaurants. The portions are often way too big (around 30-40%). Even my family who are ‘hearty eaters’ who could eat a horse (which is why they are seriously overweight) struggle to get through an average 3 course meal in a restaurant. I manage to eat about a 1/3 rd of the meal. Some restaurants offer ‘doggy bags’ for the left overs but that is just too American and vulgar for me to stomach. Smaller portions would equal less waste.
This household consists of two people. I was not taught how to cook for two and our “cooked for dinners” end up with far too much throwaways. We waste (My spouse would disagree) a lot going out to eat as well. It’s strange that an abundance of food leads to an abundance of waste. Our State laws prohibit taking cooked foods to the homeless. Pppfffft…Mean!
