Air quality is deteriorating in several Hungarian towns and cities, reaching hazardous levels in two towns due to a high concentration of PM2.5 airborne particles, the National Public Health Centre (NNK) said on Sunday.
The air quality in Putnok and Sajószentpéter has deteriorated to “hazardous” levels and is classified as “unhealthy” in Miskolc and Kazincbarcika, NNK said.
Concentrations of particulate matter are also considered to be too high in Budapest, Dorog, Esztergom, Győr, Hernadszurdok, Nyíregyháza, Oszlár, Szeged, Székesfehérvár, Szolnok, Tatabánya, Tököl, Vác, and Várpalota.
NNK said Sunday’s rainy weather, however, was expected to improve the air quality in these places.

Every little bit helps, so introducing punative tax on diesel vehicles and banning wood burning stoves etc would be a good start to cleaning up the air in urban areas. Better still would be to follow in the footsteps of Paris, Madrid, Bristol and Brussels and ban private diesel vehicles altogether. The higher taxes on diesel vehicles could be used to speed up the purchase of electric or hybrid buses.
