3 Hungarian cities among the 100 most popular tourist destinations
Three Hungarian cities have made it to a list of the most popular holiday destinations, femina.hu reports. The list was compiled by a website that specialises in finding the ideal accommodation for tourists.
Trivago.com, the world’s largest hotel search compares 1 million different accommodations from more than 250 booking websites each day. Their goal is to provide great accommodations for a reasonable cost, using an algorithm that considers not only hotel prices but guests’ opinions as well.
Trivago’s Best Value Index is a list of 100 destinations that are not only affordable but greatly popular as well. The list is led by Fenghuang, a Chinese city, and it also contains three Hungarian cities.
The highest ranking Hungarian city on the list is Pécs, at 8th place. The city was named the European Capital of Culture in 2010, and it is famous for its rich heritage of historical sites and monuments, including the 11th century Cathedral (pictured on the left), the Barbakán Tower and the early Christian necropolis, which became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The city is also abundant with the remnants of the Turkish occupation, such as the mosque of Pasha Quasim on Széchenyi Square (pictured above), or the ruins of the baths of Pasha Memi.
The next city on the list is Győr at 43rd place. The sixth largest city of Hungary, Győr is situated halfway between Budapest and Vienna. The ancient centre of the city is Káptalan Hill, where three rivers, the Danube, the Rába, and the Rábca meet. The main sights of the city include the Town Hall (pictured on the right), the Carmelite Church, and the Ark of the Covenant, a Baroque statue. Pannonhalma Archabbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is located 20 kilometres outside the city.
The third city, Szeged, took 50th place on the list. Szeged, located by the river Tisza, is home to such sights as the 20th century Votive Church (pictured on the left), and the Szeged Synagogue, the 4th largest synagogue in the world. Since 1931, the city hosts the Szeged Open Air Festival every summer, the biggest theatre festival in the country.
