After the joining the EU, Zoltán Gera, Gábor Király and Sándor Torghelle went to the Premier League, Gera stayed there among them for a long time. The most Hungarians played in the top 10 leagues between 2004 and 2013. In this period, 20 of them played in these championships. The peak was 2010-2011, when 32 Hungarians had contracts. This is the first time since 2003 when there is no Hungarian football player in the Premier League.

According to nemzetisport.hu, there are several ground why there is so few Hungarian football players in the European top leagues. First, there are too few pioneers who could go abroad. Another problem is that there are no Hungarian experts in other countries. Thirdly, there is a lack of cooperation between Hungarian and foreign clubs.
