The widow of legendary football player Ferenc Puskás has died today
Erzsébet Hunyadvári was born in 1934 in Budapest. She played handball in Kispest AC where Puskás payed football. She was 16-years old when she met the legendary football player.
The couple married in 1950 in Budapest. They had one daughter, Anikó who was born in 1952 and died in 2011 in Valencia, Spain.
She left Hungary with her 4-year-old daughter on foot on December 1, 1956 “after several failed attempts to cross the Hungarian – Austrian border to join her husband in Italy in the final days of the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956.
Later on, the family moved to Spain where Puskás became the player of Real Madrid Football Club.
In 1991 Puskás and his wife moved back to Hungary. After the legendary football player’s death in 2006 his widow personally assisted in the preparation of a biographical book on her late husband’s life, the launching of Felcsút Puskás Academy, the founding of FIFA Puskás Award, and the creation of the Puskás Institute.
