A WWII Hungarian soldier’s body was identified in Ukraine

The body of a Hungarian soldier who died during WWII was successfully identified in Ukraine. Gyula Ágner received high honours, and his remains will be brought back to Hungary, to give him a proper burial – said Roland Maruzs, Head of the Social Relations and the Department of War Tribute, writes hvg.hu.

Maruzs added that they were specifically searching for Ágner – the same way they found József Barankay, who also received the Gold Medal for Bravery. According to their information, the Lieutenant has fallen somewhere in Ukraine on 27 April 1944, and was buried in Luczky.

Even though Gyula Ágner’s dog tag was never found, his remains could be identified by comparing the samples of his niece’s DNA with his; according to the forensics, they are related. Gyula Ágner’s remains will be brought back to Hungary, and will have a proper burial. A memorial will be erected in his and his comrades’ honour in Luczky, the Lieutenant Colonel said.

Roland Maruzs added that they intend to find every soldier who fell in the First and Second World War, those who received high honours and their comrades as well. Thanks to their work, 6500 soldiers received memorials in the past few years.

The website www.hadisir.hu was launched, where information about 175.000 soldiers who were killed in action can be found.
