What a surprise! most popular song in Hungary in 2018 was a tune from 1980

More and more concerts are given in Hungary, according to Artisjus’s database. In 2018, 22,050 concerts were organised while the year before that, this number was 20,007. Considering that in 2016, 18,656 concerts were registered, we can say that a steady rise can be observed when it comes to live concerts.

Hungarian news portal Index revealed the surprising statistics that the song that was the most often played live last year is a song from 1980.

The song is called ‘Csókkirály’ (King of Kissing), sung by Miklós Fenyő and the band Hungária.

The statistics reveal that in 2018, 91,853 songs were played live in Hungary. In popular music concerts, only 9% of the repertoire was new music not older than two years, while in the case of classical music, it was even lower, only 7%. 

It seems like Hungarian music’s popularity is increasing, as in 2018, 77.26% of the songs played at concerts were by Hungarian musicians, slightly higher than the year before (74.58%). However, a third of Hungarian songs was only played live once in one full year. Moreover, half of Hungarian songs were played four times max in 2018. 

It was not revealed how many times ‘Csókkirály’ was played, or what songs follow it on the list. Likewise, we do not know what the most popular new (=not older than two years) songs were.

Interestingly, 32% of all Hungarian popular music concerts were held in Budapest, while the Hungarian capital is an even more significant role in the classical music scene, as 48% of the concerts were organised in Budapest. 

Artisjus, the Hungarian association dealing with royalties and licences, paid 714 million forints (EUR 2,213,400) in royalties for 9,111 Hungarian musicians after live concerts. 1,916 artists got at least 50,000 forints (EUR 155) for playing live. 1,200 of them made over 100,000 forints (EUR 310) from royalties in a year.
