Coronavirus – Additional crossing opens to commuters on Hungary-Romania border

An additional crossing, at Battonya, has been opened for commuters on the Hungary-Romania border, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Thursday.

Both the Hungarian and Romanian governments have imposed restrictions on passenger traffic in an effort to slow down the spread of the novel coronavirus epidemic, Szijjártó said on Facebook.

But these restrictions have complicated life for people who work or have land on either side of the border, he added.

An earlier agreement with the Romanian government to keep eight border crossings open for such people has been expanded to nine crossings, based on positive experiences so far, he said.

Szijjártó said this was good news for communities near the border and for economic cooperation between the two countries, also taking into consideration that Romania was Hungary’s fourth biggest export market.

Since Easter, the border crossings at Csengersima, Vallaj, Letavertes, Artand, Mehkerek, Gyula, Nagylak and Kiszombor had been open to commuters, Szijjártó added.
