The Aquaticum beach complex was completed from an investment of 9.5 billion forints (EUR 27 million) as well as 7.1 billion (EUR 20 million) forints of government support. The unique thermal park was inaugurated on Friday.
In his speech, Gergely Gulyás, Minister of Prime Minister’s Office, highlighted that Debrecen is one of the most dynamically developing cities in Hungary. The Aquaticum Debrecen Beach project started in 2018, and
within two years, it became the country’s most modern beach complex.
Gergely Gulyás further emphasised that local developments, including the Nagyerdei Strandfürdő (Beach of the Great Forest), can provide an opportunity for Hungary’s second-largest city to become the region’s economic, educational, and entertainment centre. He added that Aquaticum Beach was able to meet both Western European and international standards.
“The Great Forest deserves a great beach.”
The main concept was to create an exciting new spa park that can exist in harmony with the city and the nearby forest.

According to the city’s former mayor, Aquaticum Beach is not meant to provide competition for the region’s other spas. Tourists arriving in Eastern Hungary can find unique attractions in a 120-kilometre radius near Debrecen in Hajdúszoboszló, Nyíregyháza-Sóstó, and Miskolc-Tapolca. Nonetheless, since Hungarospa Hajdúszoboszló is the largest spa complex in Europe, it was a big challenge to create a unique thermal park, and this beach development was definitely a “non-average investment”, László Papp, the mayor of Debrecen, explained.
The total water area of the water park increased from 3,600 to 5,700 m2 with a total of 15 pools, 8 water slides, 12-metre-high sun terraces, and a separate pool area designated for children.
With the current and previous developments, Nagyerdő in Debrecen has become one of the most beautiful urban parks in Europe.
