Sad outlook: Budapest Airport expects a maximum of 4 million passengers for the year
Similarly to other airports, traffic at Ferenc Liszt International Airport is continuously decreasing, due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Europe and the introduction of the related travel and other restrictions.
Following the passenger traffic figure of just over 88 000 registered in September 2020, the capital city airport handled a total of 62 816 arriving and departing passengers in October, which is a 95.7% percent drop compared to the same period last year. The average daily passenger number fluctuated between 1500 and 3000 in October, as opposed to 40-50 thousand last year.
The airport operator expects a similar decrease in November; the Christmas period could bring a slight increase in December. This means that annual passenger traffic at Budapest Airport is likely to be no more than 4 million in 2020.
The strengthening of cargo volumes continued in October, which the aviation industry needs very much, after the negative impacts of the coronavirus on trade and logistics in the first half of 2020. Budapest Airport handled 11 486 tons of air cargo in October, which is a 3.66% increase compared to the already strong September of more than 11 000 tons. Based on the traffic figures of the first ten months, traffic has exceeded the coveted 100 000 ton threshold, thus providing reliable support for the Hungarian economy.
Thanks to the responsible financial management of the previous years and Budapest Airport’s financially strong owners, the operation of the company remains stable; its financing is ensured. As the operator of the airport, Budapest Airport is able to guarantee the safe and continuous operation of the airport and the availability of the staff necessary for this.
