The official website of the Hungarian police writes that entry by road, rail, and waterway from Croatia, Austria, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine is possible without any epidemiological restrictions, regardless of nationality and coronavirus immunity. However, other general conditions must be taken into consideration, such as having a valid travel document.

In the case someone comes to Hungary by air, there are certain restrictions. People can enter via flight traffic if they got infected with COVID-19 6 months prior to entering, or they got the vaccine or hold an immunity certificate. PCR tests done no more than 72 hours before entering the country are accepted as well. Upon entry, visitors are required to show their ID and vaccine/immunity certificate.

Remember, non-EU citizens might need a visa to enter Hungary. If you travel from Canada, it would be wise to pack your passport, and make sure you have the necessary visa. The passport and other travel documents accepted for entry must be valid for a minimum of 3 months beyond the period of intended stay. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you need a Schengen Visa. For Canadian citizens who come for a short visit (less than 90 days within a period of 180 days), you do not have to get a Schengen Visa. However, starting in 2021, an ETIAS authorisation will become a mandatory requirement for every Canadian. ETIAS will be valid for five years, and it can be used for an unlimited number of entries.

Generally, US citizens are not permitted to enter, with limited exceptions. To enter Hungary, you do not need a COVID-19 test. Health screening takes place at airports and other ports of entry. According to the embassy’s website “as of July 1, 2021, except in the case of entry by aircraft or from Ukraine, entry into Hungary from Croatia, Austria, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia, regardless of nationality or protection against the coronavirus, is possible without epidemiological restrictions, but providing other general conditions of entry (such as valid travel documents) is necessary.”

On the website, it is also written that a 10-day quarantine is currently required for all international arrivals. Travellers are exempted from quarantine if they do a test in Hungary at two different times with at least 48 hours between them, and the test does not detect the coronavirus. If the first of the two tests is performed in a Schengen country, the United States of America or Canada, that is accepted as well.
