Spanish University pays tribute to Hungarian-born biochemist Katalin Karikó

Katalin Karikó is a Hungarian-born biochemist, whose decades of work with the mRNA technology was instrumental in the development of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine and have helped save many people from the coronavirus.

Karikó has been awarded for her work, and received the Public Media’s Person of the Year Award from public media foundation MTVA’s chief executive. The award, founded by public service media operator Duna Médiaszolgáltató and MTVA.

It is handed out at the end of each year to those whose professional careers have delivered lasting value and who had a significant impact on current events over the last year, MTVA said in a statement. She was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Szeged.

She has become well-known around the world and recently the Spanish Valencia Polytechnic University has paid tribute to the important work of Katalin Karikó with a mural.

The art piece is part of the first mural of the 2021-2022 academic year of the Women in Science project , promoted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and the Las Naves innovation center of Valencia City Council, with the support of the FECYT of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, states UPV’s website.
