How latest AEMC’s National Energy Objectives are protecting Australian consumers from retailer frauds?

Australian Energy Market Commission holds the ultimate authority in regulating the energy market in Australia. It also enforces rules and regulations in favor of the consumers and retailers to maintain harmony in the energy business. Now, when it comes to service providers and especially private retailers, they always find a way to get more money with a low supply of services. In such cases, the consumers often end up paying unnecessary charges and empty their pockets.
Ultimately the citizens seek governments’ perusal on the high prices. To avoid such scams and pocket breaks, the AEMC enforced certain regulations against the retailers in the energy market that help the consumers losing their money on high energy bills. These rules enact under the ” National Energy Customer Framework( NEFC).”
The NEFC is the legal suite for regulating the sale and supply of electricity and gas to customers.
According to the AEMC & NEFC, the consumers get their right to pay the amount for only the energy they consumed but not more.
As per the Regulation
“The consumer has the right to provide their remote meter reading (in case they have a smart meter) if they feel that the retailer’s readings are incorrect” with proper calculation.
Now, this is a definite breakthrough for all the consumers who are fed up with fake readings and unwanted bills. According to this regulation, the consumer can provide their meter reading for billing purposes, if they feel insecure about the retailers’ readings. If you own a smart meter, then you can also have access to the readings and every alteration in your readings to report on your retailer.
The AEMC also gives rights to the consumers to ” switch to their desired energy supplier at the desired time, if they feel the retailer services have tampered.”
This regulation was implemented on 1 July 2012 initially but was amended many times. This rule also enacts under NEFC.
With these two regulations in action, no retailer can force the consumer to pay the bill according to their readings (in case of consumer complaints).
So, if you also feel your retailer is charging unfairly over your bills, then you can let them know about your rights and provide your reading and save hundreds of dollars.
