One of the popular Hungarian series will no longer make jokes about Ukrainians, Russians
RTL Klub started to broadcast the Keresztanyu (“The Godmother”) series in January 2021. It quickly became one of the most popular series of the commercial channel in Hungary. Currently, it has 161 episodes, and the story takes place at the Ukrainian-Hungarian border.
Series at the border
The genre of the series is action comedy. The story focuses on a mafia family doing business on both sides of the border. They live in Makosszállás, a fictional border crossing. Therefore, it contains many jokes about Hungarians, Ukrainians, and Russians. Furthermore, Ukrainian smugglers have a crucial role in it. But that seems to stop now.
According to Blikk, RTL Klub said that Keresztanyu’s storyline takes place in peacetime. Thus, it has no connection to real life or the current war. The TV channel plans to continue its broadcast. However, there will be modifications, Piroska Molnár, a famous Hungarian actress and the main character of the series, said in a video shared recently.
There will be no jokes about Ukrainians, Russians
In the video, she talks about the outbreak of the war and expresses their solidarity with the suffering citizens and all those who try to get to safety. She also added that
they were worried about peace and highlighted that everybody should take care.
The footage was broadcasted before each episode in the last few days.
RTL Klub said that the number of viewers of the series is stable, and the outbreak of the war did not change it. In the 18-49 age group, it had 17.3 pc, so the channel was satisfied with Keresztanyu.
To Blikk’s question of whether they modified the series because of the war, the channel said that they
cut out the jokes about Ukrainian and Russian people.
Furthermore, they decided to omit such humour in the fourth season.
