Hungarian leading politicians discuss concepts of Christian Europe
Baile Tusnad, Romania, July 20 (MTI) – The European Union has “the most intolerant European elite”, Gergely Gulyás, deputy speaker of parliament and head of the legislative committee, said in Baile Tusnad (Tusnádfürdő), in central Romania, on Wednesday.
Participating in a round table on the first day of a summer university held every year, Gulyás called on Europe’s elite to show “at least some tolerance” towards traditional European values. Christianity must be seen as a fundamental value in social policy, Gulyás insisted.
It is no longer the case that all values are shared within the EU, he said. Hungary, for instance, in the areas of family policy or social policy, does not have much in common with Scandinavian countries.
Zsolt Németh, the head of Hungarian parliament’s foreign affairs committee, said that Christian Europe is not a religious concept but should be seen as a bridge between the Christian church and European politics.
“There are no politics without values; it is values that politics must be built on,” said Németh, adding that the separation of church and state is a fundamental principle in Christian societies but not in Islam.
Szabolcs Takács, Hungary’s state secretary for EU affairs, said Europe has, and must have, a Christian vision which is based on Christian foundations.
