Hungary Wins Gold, Bronze in Junior Open Water Swimming Championships
(MTI) – Hungary’s Nikoletta Kiss won a gold medal and Flora Sibalin a bronze at the 2nd FINA World Junior Open Water Swimming Championships at Balatonfured on Saturday.
Kiss completed the 7.5km girls’ individual event organised at Lake Balaton, clocking 1 hour 32 minutes 42.27 seconds. Russian Anastasia Azarova came second with a time of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 43.73. Sibalin came in third with 1 hour 32 minutes 46.53 seconds.
The boys’ 5km individual event was won by Taylor Abbott, of the United States. He finished with a time of 56 minutes 13.32 seconds. He was followed by two contestants from China.
The Swimming Championships’ Saturday events was opened by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
The competition ended with team events on Sunday.
International swimming federation FINA selected Balatonfured as the venue of this year’s championship after it decided earlier to cancel the event scheduled originally for August 28-30 in Eilat in Israel. FINA cited “unstable and unpredictable situation in the region.”
