Justice minister informs Commission on Hungary immigration measures
Budapest, June 24 (MTI) – Hungary will temporarily not receive “applicants for international protection” for an indefinite period starting on June 23, Justice Minister Laszlo Trocsanyi told the European Commission in a letter released to MTI on Wednesday.
In his letter, the minister said, however, that “Hungary fully respects European refugee policy stipulations, including those in the Dublin III Regulation,” and added that Hungary “expects other EU members to do the same”.
The Hungarian government will do all in its capacity to resolve the refugee problem, Trocsanyi said, and expressed his readiness for early talks with Frans Timmermans, vice-president of the Commission, about “issues around the application” of the Dublin Regulation in Hungary.
He said Hungary’s immigration office had already informed the authorities of Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden and the UK on Hungary’s position.
He added that the number of illegal migrants apprehended at Hungary’s Schengen borders was 60,620 between January 1 and June 22 this year, and 60,089 people were apprehended on the Hungarian-Serbian border. The number of applications for refugee status submitted in Hungary this year was also above 60,000, which shows a significant increase from earlier years and there are no signs that this pressure would drop on Hungary, he said.
Hungary has the capacities to meet the basic requirements resulting from the Dublin Regulation, such as registration and care services, and will fulfil these, Trocsanyi said.
The extraordinary situation demands crisis management and forces Hungary to introduce temporary measures with immediate effect, he said. This, however, does not mean that Hungary is not committed to fully complying with the regulation, he said.
Many of the applicants arrive in Hungary after crossing other countries where they already should have been registered in line with the Dublin rules. If all member countries located on the migration routes had fully implemented the regulations, Hungary would not be in the current situation, Trocsanyi said.
