Only 42 percent of Hungarian households own a car
A 2014 research of Bosch shows that 2 percent of Hungarian households own a car, 40% of which has one, while 2% owns 2 or more vehicles, zipp.hu reports.
This shows a decrease in car ownership, as in the preceding years, this percentage was 44% in 2012 and 45% in 2010. This year’s data is exactly the same as the 2008 results, when the crisis broke down the tendency of car owning. Then, it was 5% of the households that had more than one vehicle, and 37% which owned one car.
The scale of those living in a household with a car is the highest in the age groups between 30 and 39, and 40-49 year olds, 50% of these households have an automobile. The data shows a decrease in car ownership in all age groups but one: it is only citizens in their 60s who show a growing tendency for car owning, compared with the 2012 data. 29% of the population in their 60s and over reported owning a car this year, while this number was 23% in 2012, 22% in 2011 and only 20% in 2008.
The purchase of new vehicles in Hungary is almost insignificant, the average age of the cars show a decrease from 2008, but the tendeny seems to have stabilized up to this year, and there is even a sign of improvement regarding this aspect of the research. The average age of the cars owned by Hungarian households is 11 years, and the percentage of cars that are younger than 5 years old is 5%, which is significantly less than the data preceding the crisis: until 2008, 30% of the cars was newer than 5 years old. The most recent data shows that it is 33% of the car stock that is 6-10 years old, 45% 11-20 years old, and 7% of the vehicles is over 20 years old.
The research was carried out by Median Public Opinion- and Market Research Institution and Robert Bosch Inc. and included a survey regarding the condition of the vehicles, the habits of car usage and the use of car repair in Hungary. The research is suppletory, as there had been no data concerning this area in Hungary. The study was held continually, once in 2 years from 2008, which adds to the value of the data provided by Median and Robert Bosch Inc., which allows us to track down the tendencies of car usage in Hungary. The 2014 research covered 924 households owning a car, and the sample is representative regarding gender, age groups, qualifications and place of residence, although it applies only to those over the age of 18.
