What happens when everyone who registered gets vaccinated in Hungary?
It is important to restart the economy and ease the general stress levels of people who are suffering because of the restrictions, but with too early relaxation, the number of those infected can blow up so much that the number of people in hospital could start to rise again. This could result in a dramatic rise in the number of deaths.
Hungary is now seemingly over the peak of the third wave. The bad news is that the situation is still very severe, and the infection statistics might be distorted because fewer tests were done over the holiday weekend than normally.
Nevertheless, the government continues to insist on reopening. Based on the vaccination plan, we will reach three million people vaccinated at the beginning of the week, which, according to Viktor Orbán, is the next milestone. After that they can decide on further reopening steps.
The chances of success of the Hungarian vaccination program could be further worsened if it turns out that the vaccines are not as effective as they are said to be. This possibility has been highly suspected in the case of Chinese vaccines, but now the head of the Chinese Epidemiological Center has acknowledged that there is room for improvement in their vaccines’ effectiveness.
Recently, the Serbian authorities were also confronted with the fact that in the case of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine, many did not start adequate antibody production. At the beginning of March, the third round of vaccinations (as in an additional dose) was started in the United Arab Emirates.
However, this does not mean that Chinese vaccines are not effective weapons against the coronavirus, only that a higher quantity is needed.
The Prime Minister spoke about the fact that in the national consultation, people were the first to ask for the opening of schools. This is not true at all. There were no schools mentioned in the national consultation. Orbán also claimed that the people had asked him to open restaurants after the schools, so it would not be surprising if in the next phase the restaurants, or at least the terraces, would follow.
During April, the vaccination plan could reach a more stringent limit of more than three million people: anyone who has already registered for it can get the vaccination. Currently, roughly
40 percent of the country’s population is registered.
What happens if all registrants received their first and then their second vaccinations? All that is certain is that we will still be far from complete immunity and safety. The opposition calls for the registration to be cancelled by making vaccinations compulsory, but it is absurd to think that this would take millions more to the vaccination points. If younger people (teenagers and adolescents) were given the vaccine, the number of people vaccinated could be increased by a few hundred thousand, but even that would not be safe enough for a general reopening.
