EP elections – Pelcz to head Fidesz list
(MTI) – The ruling Fidesz party has fielded MEP Ildiko Gall Pelcz, its deputy leader, to top the party’s list for the May European parliamentary elections, a MEP of Fidesz said on Thursday.
Second on the list is Jozsef Szajer who announced the list at a press conference. Third is Laszlo Tokes, an ethnic Hungarian MEP of Romania, followed by Tamas Deutsch, Andras Gyurk, Kinga Gal, Gyorgy Schopflin and Norbert Erdos, said Szajer. Most of these candidates have served as the party’s MEPs in the past four years.
Szajer said the next two candidates on the list would be a representative from Vojvodina and one from Transcarpathia, but their names would be released later. Szajer said about half of their current MEPs featuring on the list are expected to be re-elected.
Pelcz said that group of Fidesz MEPs would want to be strong advocates of Hungarian interests in the European Parliament and would refuse to accept any “dictates” from the European Commission. She said that based on their past performance and Fidesz’s result in the April 6 Hungarian election, the party has a realistic chance to win 10 to 12 seats in the European Parliament.
Hungary will hold the EP election ballot on May 25.
