12-year negative record: Petrol is the most expensive in Hungary in the region

Hungary has the most expensive petrol in the region. Meanwhile, the price of diesel is the second highest in Hungary compared to neighbouring countries.

The prices jumped to the top after the abolition of the price cap

Hungarian fuel prices jumped from the middle of the regional average to the top immediately after the abolition of the price cap, szmo.hu reports. The domestic petrol price of HUF 627 is now the highest among the seven neighbouring countries, while diesel is the second most expensive in the region. This was reported by Népszava, based on a database of the transport website Cargopedia.hu.

For petrol, we are followed by Slovakia and Austria. The cheapest price is in Ukraine, where it is only HUF 539 per litre. But the Romanian and Slovenian rates are very close too. According to the newspaper, Hungary last topped the regional petrol price list in the week of the 2010 elections. In recent months, the domestic price of petrol has generally been the third most expensive on the market.

Second most expensive diesel, most expensive petrol

The Hungarian diesel price of HUF 691 is the second most expensive, with the Serbs ahead of us with an average price of HUF 712. Hungary is followed by Austria, which is also generally more expensive. Diesel in Ukraine is also the cheapest at HUF 574, followed by Slovenia and Romania. According to the database, diesel was the most expensive in Hungary on four occasions this year alone.

What is the reason?

Recently, however, there have been very large fluctuations. Although at the end of November, we still had the highest price for diesel, in the week of the price cap’s abolition, the Hungarian price was the third cheapest in the region.

According to experts, the sudden deterioration in the situation is mainly due to the knock-on effect of the lifting of the price freeze and the improvement in the forint exchange rate. The strengthening of the domestic currency makes foreign wells relatively cheaper. Another effect is that fuel importers are slowly re-entering the domestic market.
