Survey shows more young adults live with parents
Budapest, January 8 (MTI) – The number of young Hungarian adults living with their parents is on the increase, daily Magyar Nemzet said on Thursday, citing a recent survey by Tarki.
Two-thirds of Hungarians aged between 18 and 34 do not want or cannot afford to leave the family nest, the survey shows.
In international comparison, Hungarians always had a tendency of moving away from their parents later rather than sooner and in recent years, there has been a further increase in the number of those who wait until 34 to leave the parents’ household.
The Tarki survey shows that in western and northern Europe, some 60-80 percent of people move away from their parents once they reach 18. At the same time, in the eastern and southern EU countries young people tend to leave the family home later and only around a quarter can live independently right after finishing their studies.
The proportion of Hungarians aged between 18 and 34 still living with their parents increased from 56 percent in 2008 to 66 percent by 2012. According to the study, the economic crisis unfolding in 2009 significantly increased the difficulties that people face in their twenties and juvenile unemployment grew from 16 percent in 2008 to 22 percent by 2012.
