Interior Minister: Hungarian civil guard instrumental in crime prevention

The civil guard, who served about 9.2 million hours in 2017, is instrumental in crime prevention in Hungary, Interior Minister Sándor Pintér said at the assembly of the Association of Civil Guards in Budapest on Saturday.

Among other tasks, the civil guard was very efficient in patrolling the southern borders, apprehending some 400 migrants and helping the arrest of another 500, he said.

That the crime rate in Hungary halved since 2010 and the country is now the 15th safest in the world is partly their merit, he said.

Government support has multiplied since the ruling government came into power in 2010, he said. This year, the corps will also receive at least 50 used police vehicles in addition to its regular funding, he said.

The association’s head, András Túrós, said that the corps have seen a “golden age” between 2012 and 2017. Its funding surpassed 1 billion forints (EUR 3.2m) and it received 570 new patrol cars, he said. Túrós pledged to further increase the patrols’ presence and visibility.
