Iggy Pop will return to Budapest this summer
Iggy Pop will perform as a solo artist in Hungary for the first time in 25 years, as reported by 24.hu.
The ‘God Father of Punk’, the title he earned after having such a great influence on the artists in the genre with his band the The Stooges, will perform in Budapest Park on the 24th of July. Despite performing with The Stooges in Hungary at the Sziget Festival in 2006 and the 2012 Volt Festival, his last performance in the capital as a solo artist was back in 1994 at the now-demolished Petőfi Csarnok. He will join the list of rock and metal performers at Budapest Park this summer, which will include the likes of Sum 41, Disturbed and the Architects.
Before discovering the unstoppable and raw power within him and becoming one of the first artists to try the iconic stage dive, James Newell Osterberg Jr, which is Iggy Pop’s real name, started his career as a drummer for various high school bands in his native State of Michigan. In 1968 he became one of the founding members of The Stooges, which in the early 60s and late 70s released three albums (The Stooges, Fun House, Raw Power). They had an enormous impact on the punk music scene and have influenced the bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Ramones.
After the second breakup of the band, which occurred partly due Iggy’s persisting drug use problem, he decided to focus on his solo career, where he was helped by his good friend David Bowie. In 1977 Iggy released his first and second solo albums The Idiot and Lust for Life respectively, which kick-started decades of success. They include classics such as his most well-known song the ‘The Passenger’ in addition to ‘Lust For Life’ and ‘Nightclubbing’.

Between 2003 and 2016 the band reunited and released The Weirdness and Ready to Die albums. They decided to go their separate ways for good after the passing away of band members, allowing Iggy to focus on his solo career once again.
In 2016 he released his latest album, Post Pop Depression, in which he was able to demonstrate his ability to remain innovative 50 years after he made his debut in the music industry. Produced with the help of Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, it was nominated for the best alternative music album at the Grammy Awards.
Despite being 71, he is showing no signs of stopping. Just like in his younger years Iggy still performs his onstage antics that he is so well known for, making this summer concert an unmissable opportunity.
Tickets can be bought from 9.00 am on the 27th of March and will be available from the official website of Budapest Park.
It will be just one performance of what promises to be an incredible summer of popular music in Hungary, which will also include the 2019 Balaton Sound with its high profile DJs.
