Coronavirus – Epidemic vindicates role of nation states in EU, says specialist
The novel coronavirus epidemic has vindicated the importance of the role of nation states within the European Union, geopolitical strategist George Friedman said in an interview in the Saturday edition of the daily Magyar Nemzet.
The era of the EU’s role as a “super-government” has proven temporary, Friedman, founder and chairman of online publication Geopolitical Futures, said. But rather than the EU seeing a rise of nation states, Friedman said, what is happening now had more to do with the fact that “they were never forgotten to begin with”.
Nation states cannot hand over their sovereignty to a transnational entity, he added.
Friedman said the coronavirus outbreak had exposed the limits of the EU, arguing that in a time of war or during an epidemic it did not have the ability to make decisions for which it could be held accountable.
