Ten hidden Hungarian lakes you need to discover – PHOTOS

Hungarian lakes: Lake Balaton, Velence and Fertő. Is that all? Not really! Many think that if it comes to Hungarian lakes, these three are the only ones one should visit especially in the summer season or autumn and spring. There are many other lakes hidden in the country and this article; we would like to show you the top ten you need to discover.

Deseda Lake

Located north from Kaposvár (Somogy County) this is the country’s longest artificial lake with its 8-km length. The lake is an ideal location for cycling and extreme water sports.

Szelidi Lake

The Balaton of all Bács-Kiskun County residents is 5 km long; the fifth biggest lake in Hungary. Its water has a healing effect on the human body with a high quantity of sodium chloride.

Sóstó

This lake in Nyíregyháza was already known in the era of King Matthias and was used to call Igrice. The lake has thermal water ideal for people with muscle and spine problems.

Arlói Lake

The most special lake in Hungary is the only one which was created by a landslide. The 10-hectare-lake is the favourite spot of Hungarian fishermen.

Szálkai Lake

In the neighbourhood of Szekszárd (Tolna County), the lake is the artificial location of the small village of Szálka. The lake is ideal for swimming and fishing, not to mention the famous Szekszárd wine region not far from it.

Vadása Lake

Located in Őrség, the lake is separated into two parts: one side of it is covered with forest trees while the other side is taken by small apartments and people arriving to spend their vacations.

Gébárti Lake

The lake forms the shape of a horseshoe with trails, fishing spots and sports opportunities for visitors.

Dorgói Lake

This lake is not far from Tokaj, the country’s most famous wine region, UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s first officially registered wine region.

Kotró Lake

This lake has the cleanest water in the country, no wonder it is used as a scuba-diving location for instructors and those who would like to learn.

Öreg Lake

The Old Lake is located in Tata (Komárom-Esztergom County) next to the Castle of Tata where even the British actor Henry Cavill witnessed the lake while he was shooting The Witcher in Hungary.
