EU may have to help Albania with migrant crisis, says Áder in Tirana – Photos
Tirana, April 5 (MTI) – The European Union must help Albania if migrants use the country as a transit route, Hungarian President János Áder said in Tirana on Tuesday.
After talks with Bujar Nishani, his Albanian counterpart, Áder said the EU “cannot make the same mistake of leaving countries to struggle with the migrant crisis alone” as had been the case with Turkey. Áder noted, however, that currently there was nothing concrete to suggest that migrants wanted to cross through Albania.
Áder said the most important lesson of the migrant crisis was that it highlighted the importance of prevention.
Nishani told the press conference that Albania would take every necessary step to secure its borders and the country will seek to participate in the European action in handling the migrant situation.
The presidents were in agreement that economic relations between Hungary and Albania harbour untapped potential. They both called for developments in several areas, such as tourism, electricity and water management.
Áder said economic ties could also grow if there were a direct flight between Budapest and Tirana, which, he said, the Hungarian government was ready to support. A direct link could be established in the near future, he added.
After the presidents’ meeting, a working plan for cooperation in education was signed. This involves twenty scholarships for Albanians to study in Hungarian universities.
The Hungarian president is in Tirana on an official two-day visit accompanied by his wife Anita Herczegh. He is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Edi Rama and parliamentary speaker Ilir Meta. On Tuesday afternoon, Áder is scheduled to open a photo exhibition by Roland Tasho about Hungary.
