Bomb Scare In Budapest: Chain Bridge Closed, Then Reopened

Budapest, February 8 (MTI) – Budapest’s Chain Bridge and the tunnel on the western Buda side were closed off to traffic on Saturday morning after a bomb scare, the Budapest Transport Centre BKK said.

Police opened the bridge and the surrounding area in the afternoon, the BKK said on its Facebook page.

A sign reading “No pasaran” (an anti-fascist slogan) was posted near the tunnel in the morning, MTI’s correspondent said from the site. Two demonstrations were expected to be held in the area on Saturday afternoon.

Police stopped a fight between demonstrators and counter-demonstrators, two groups which were separated by cordons, in the Buda Castle on Saturday afternoon.

A demonstration to commemorate the Day of Honour, a break-out attempt of German and Hungarian soldiers from Buda Castle besieged by the Soviet Army in February 1945, was organised for Saturday, while banned by police, the daily Nepszabadsag said earlier.
