Hungarian set decorator won Oscar for Dune! – Learn more about her here
After the BAFTA Award for Best Production Design Zsuzsanna (Zsuzsi) Sipos won the Academy Award in that category yesterday. Below you can read what you should know about her. The Hungarian set decorator held back her tears while she thanked the award in Hungarian.
According to Blikk, when it became clear that Péter Bergendy’s horror movie, Post mortem, was not on the Academy Award shortlist, many believed there would be no Hungarians to cheer. Later, the media discovered that Zsuzsanna Sipos was nominated for Best Production Design for her work in the film Dune.
Interestingly, part of the blockbuster was filmed in Hungary. Mrs Sipos worked together with the Canadian Patrice Vermette, and
yesterday evening they could hold the golden Oscar statue high in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
“I’m a crier, and this award means me a lot. Thanks to my team and everybody for the opportunity” – Zsuzsanna Sipos said after the award ceremony. Moreover, she even thanked the Oscar in Hungarian.
Mrs Sipos’s professional career took some turns before the top of the movie industry. She studied marketing in high school, but she later realized she would not like to work as one. Therefore, she switched and continued to study interior design.
She met her later husband in the school, whose father was the owner of the biggest catering company in Hungary. Moreover, his firm provided food and drinks for the staff working on movies. She was first asked whether she would like to work in the movie industry on the shooting of Steven Spielberg’s famous München.
She said Yes, and
moviemakers discovered her talent quickly.
First, she worked on advertisements. Later, she received work in foreign movie shootings. For example, she worked as an assistant set director in the world-famous ‘The Borgias.’
Sipos worked with Will Smith in the Gemini Man. Furthermore, her filmography contains the Hungarian ‘Viharsarok’, the Norwegian ‘Birkebeinerne’ and ‘The Alienist’, where she worked as a set decorator. She worked in ‘Blade Runner 2049’, with which she wrote her name into the history of science fiction movies.
Interestingly, her husband is also a set decorator.
