Budapest to introduce new parking system

Instead of today’s complicated parking system with 27 different parking zones, the Municipality of Budapest is introducing a new, uniform parking system. Continue reading below to find out more.

The new unified parking system will create 4 easy-to-understand and transparent zones by consolidating the 27 previous zone types. Parking prices, operating times and time limits are clearly regulated in the four zones. The Municipal Assembly will decide on the boundaries of the new zones at its next meeting on 29 June. They will take the proposals from districts.

The new system will create the following zones, says Budapest.hu:

• Zone A: 600 HUF (1.50 EUR), 8:00-22:00, max 3 hours
• Zone B: 450 HUF (1.10 EUR), 8:00-20:00, max 3 hours
• Zone C: 300 HUF (0.75 EUR), 8:00-18:00, max 3 hours
• Zone D: 200 HUF (0.50 EUR), 8.00-18.00, no time limit

The new system will enter into force on 5 September 2022, subject to a favourable decision by the Municipal Assembly next week.

New parking system in Budapest

Instead of the 27 different zones, the new system aims to narrow that number down to four. The aim of the unified system is to provide car users with an easy-to-understand system of zones. The unified system will be accompanied by a reworked parking information system, reports Pénzcentrum. The new charging for public parking spaces, in line with the new zoning system, will aim to speed up the turnover of cars and thus improve the use of parking spaces.

The current parking system in Budapest is quite difficult to follow. This is a serious disadvantage for drivers. There are 27 different types of zones with different parking charges, operating hours and time limits. Several other additional rules, which are often difficult to understand, are also in place.

Parking information signs on the streets are not uniform, and their design and information content varies from district to district. The current rules do not sufficiently encourage a faster turnover of cars in public parking spaces, making it more difficult to find on-street parking. Meanwhile, the capacity of underground car parks available in the city is often under-utilised.

As part of the new unified parking system, new unified information signs will also appear on the streets, making the characteristics of each parking zone clearer, easier to use and quicker to recognise for car drivers.
