Hungarian vignette prices will increase considerably

As inflation is soaring in the country, the annual price increase of vignettes is expected to be around 15.6 percent. The law says that prices have to be increased in January according to the current inflation rate in August.  Despite the rampant inflation, no modification in the legislation is required, reported László Palkovits minister to RTL.

Prices based on inflation

Car owners in Hungary can undoubtedly expect to pay more to use motorways. The continuation of the fuel price stop still lingers in the air, as the decision will only be made next week. Whether the fuel prices will remain as they are or not is still in question, but vignette prices will definitely cost more. The Gazdaságkutató Zrt. expects inflation to get worse though. Suppliers may pass the added costs on to customers.

As the inflation rate in this year’s August was at 15.6 percent, according to the legislation, this is the rate by which costs must increase. Albeit, according to Gergely Gulyás minister, the decision about the legislation was made in 2018. Back then, there was no recession, the legislation, without interventions, made fees calculable. This hasn’t changed during the recession following the COVID pandemic. So further change isn’t expected.

The new prices

Calculations of Portfolio.hu state that the price of a 10-day vignette will increase by about 600 HUF (≈1.5€). The cost of regional vignettes will increase by 850 HUF (≈2.15€). Finally, the annual vignette’s price will increase by 7,310 HUF (≈18.48€). This means that a 10-day vignette will cost 4,420 HUF (≈11.18€), a regional 6,300 HUF (≈15.93€), and an annual one 54,160 HUF (≈136.95€).

The raised cost of road usage will be added to the price of the transported goods. Heavier items, like refrigerators or washing machines, will experience a significant price hike, says László Molnár, the CEO of Gazdaságkutató Zrt. RTL reports that transportation costs can be 30 percent higher than last year. Transportation costs can grow even more due to the increased prices. This will lead to more inflation next year as in January, the new prices come into effect.
