It will be much easier to study in Hungary’s higher education this September!

Change language:

The admission process is to change fundamentally this September. That is because the government, among others, abolished the centrally determined minimum point limit. Thus, the Hungarian higher education’s gates will open for more Hungarian and foreign students. Below, we collected the details.

According to eduline.hu, before 2023, you were not eligible to continue your studies in Hungarian higher education if you did not obtain at least 280 points in the case of BA/BSc programs. The limit was 240 points in academic training and 50 points in MA/MSc programs. Even if you wanted to pay for your studies, you could not get enrolled in any of the programs without that amount of points.

The old system aimed to allow only those students to continue their studies, who had at least an average performance in high school or at the university. For example, collecting 240 and 280 points for vocational training or BA/BSc programs meant that you were not one of the hard-working students. But you could complete your studies without fail or with lower grades. Of course, you had to collect many points for popular programs like management, law or economy. However, that system changes this September, and everybody can sit on the benches of the universities.

From 2023, higher education institutions may decide to determine a minimum limit, but most of them will not do so. For example, the University of Miskolc in East Hungary already made it clear on Facebook that they will not use that opportunity to select only the better-performing students. That is probably because rural universities struggle with the lack of learners. And since the Hungarian higher education system is financed according to the number of students learning in it, it is in the best interest of every institution to pack its benches with as many people as possible.

The post of the University of Miskolc above says that there will be no point limit this year. But, of course, not everybody can continue their studies there. The admission points will be determined by three factors: the number of students choosing a given program, their relative performance and the number of students the university can enroll in that program.
