Fidesz MEPs: ‘We’ll not allow Brussels to stymie utility price caps scheme’

Two MEPs of ruling Fidesz said that they would continue to stand up for Hungary’s utility price caps scheme, after a vote of the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) voted to support the EC’s revised electricity market reform proposal, in Brussels on Wednesday.

The EU’s targeted reform proposed in March in light of the war in Ukraine is aimed at ending the investment uncertainty in electricity markets and accelerating the use of competitive renewables.

Edina Tóth said in a statement that the proposal, if approved “would undermine the protection of citizens against soaring energy prices”. “It is unacceptable that Brussels should dictate to member states when to apply low utility prices which is why we say ‘no’ to the electricity market reform proposal”.

András Gyürk said in a separate statement that “Fidesz would not allow Brussels and the left wing to stymie the utility price caps scheme”. “This is unacceptable, we want to, and will, stand up for maintaining that scheme,” he said.
