Sad statistics: These are the most dangerous motorways in Hungary

New road statistics arrived showing the most dangerous motorways in Hungary in 2022. Thankfully, there were 8.4% fewer traffic accidents in Hungary in H1 2023 compared to the same period of 2022. However, the number of injured reached 6,424 in Hungary between January and June.

Compared to the population, the highest number of accidents occurred in Budapest (9 incident per 10,000 citizens). The second and third place went to Vas and Zala counties, where many people regularly travel to Austria to work. The M1 motorway is the most dangerous road in Hungary.

Nationally, the number of accidents per 10,000 citizens was 6.7 in H1. In Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Somogy and Tolna counties, accident number fell by 26% and 21-21%, respectively. However, the number of accidents increased by 13% in Komárom-Esztergom county.

3% of the accidents were fatal. 29% resulted in serious injuries, while 68% resulted in light injuries. The rate of fatal accidents was the highest in Tolna County (6.5%). Most accidents were caused by private cars; bikes and motorbikes were concerned in 9.9% and 3.7% of the accidents.

In 2022, there were 582 accidents on Hungary’s motorways, Pénzcentrum wrote. Considering that, the following motorways were the most dangerous in the country:

• M1 between Budapest and Vienna: 146 accidents;
• M3 connecting Budapest with Miskolc and Ukraine (Transcarpathia): 131 accidents;
• M5 leading from Budapest to Szeged and Serbia: 120;
• M7 connecting Budapest with Lake Balaton and Croatia: 67;
• M0 which surrounds Budapest: 85.
• M6 connecting Budapest and Mohács: 28.
