MEP Márton Gyöngyösi (Non-attached Member of the European Parliament) has published a video message in which he talks about the importance of staying in the EU:
Text version of video message:
“The EU is not a perfect institution (which one is?)
However, its benefits are palpable: thanks to the EU, there has been no war amongst its member states for decades; you can travel freely without any special papers; you can freely study and work in another country; you can phone home from abroad for free; most products are actually quite much cheaper than they would be without the open internal borders and single customs duties; last but not least, Hungary has not become a total dictatorship so far on account of the EU.
If there was no EU or if we dropped out of it, then you would need a visa not only to open a confectionery in Vienna but to buy a T-shirt in an outlet, too; if there was no EU, most commodities would immediately be more expensive due to the customs duties; if you wanted to study or work abroad, you’d have to expect tedious paperwork and costly visas; and you could even face serious conflicts breaking out in our direct neighbourhood.
If there was no EU, we would have no protection against external forces and I’m not talking about conspiracy theories here.
The EU may not be perfect but we are in it too, and we can shape it as well. And it has no alternative.”
