Balcony collapses and falls on two people in downtown Budapest

Early in the morning on Monday, 11 December, a balcony collapsed in downtown Budapest. It fell on two men who had to be pulled out from under the rubble. They suffered serious injuries and were transported to hospital.
A balcony overlooking an inner courtyard in Paulay Ede Street in Budapest’s 6th district has collapsed, Bors reports. The balcony fell on two men working there. They later had to be pulled out from under the rubble, according to a report from the scene. Rescuers transported them to hospital with serious injuries.
The building is being renovated, and according to a report from the scene, a wall may have been being demolished when the accident occurred. It is not yet known whether the balcony fell due to human error or an unfortunate accident, but the Budapest Police Headquarters is investigating the suspected case of endangerment in the course of employment.
Later, Telex reported that the National Ambulance Service (Országos Mentőszolgálat) said a wall collapsed on the two men, who both suffered head injuries, one of them also suffered injuries to his spine. They were rescued from the rubble by emergency services personnel.
