Bus travel in Hungary to be unimaginably expensive next year
The daily cost of organised bus trips (for example for children’s courses) will rise from HUF 17,000 (EUR 44.58) to HUF 290,000 (EUR 760.48) on the Budapest-Miskolc route. From 1 February, buses will not have to buy motorway vignettes: however, this does not mean it will be cheaper. They will also be subject to the kilometre-based, pay-per-use toll rules.
From 1 February, buses will no longer be able to buy motorway stickers (read more HERE). They will be subject to the kilometre-based, pay-per-use toll rules for lorries, in line with an EU obligation, napi.hu writes. In other words, not only will they have to pay more for using motorways, but they will also have to pay for using main roads (expressways and trunk roads), in proportion to the distance travelled.
This will most likely make organised trips, such as busing rural children to swimming lessons or from small villages to district schools, significantly more expensive.
Based on the current information, autopalyamatrica.hu has made a calculation for the example sections Budapest-Miskolc and Budapest-Siófok. On this basis, if someone would go by bus to Miskolc 10 times, they would have to pay…
- …HUF 17,730 (EUR 46.50) in 2023,
- …but HUF 292,935 (EUR 768.20) in 2024.
In the same way, if we consider Siófok, it would cost…
- …HUF 17,730 (EUR 46.50) in 2023,
- …and HUF 170,485 (EUR 447.33) in 2024.
If we look at the same routes for 30 days, in 2024, a bus trip to Miskolc will cost HUF 878,806 (EUR 2,306) instead of HUF 25,150 (EUR 66), a 3500% increase, and to SiĂłfok HUF 512,245 (EUR 1,344) instead of 25.150 (EUR 66), a 2000% increase.
