Hungary house speaker meets Belgian Senate president

Budapest, November 4 (MTI) – House Speaker László Kövér stressed the importance of dialogue between Hungary and Belgium about matters concerning the EU’s future, after meeting Christine Defraigne, the president of the Belgian Senate, in Budapest on Friday.

Kövér noted that the two countries are NATO allies and members of the same community, the European Union.

Further, both countries are at the forefront of regional cooperation within the EU, Belgium as member of the Benelux group, and Hungary as member of the Visegrad Four grouping, Kövér said.

These shared traits mandate a dialogue between the two countries about crucial issues affecting the EU’s future, such as handling Brexit and the crisis in Ukraine, tackling the consequences of the economic and financial crisis, and addressing enlargement, Kövér told a press conference.

Defraigne also underlined the importance of dialogue in coping the challenges faced by Europe.

“Dialogue is important so that we can understand each other, express our opinions and settle differences as honestly as possible.” she said.
