Jewish foundation head calls Zoltai recall from post “unprecedented”

Budapest, September 15 (MTI) – The president of Jewish heritage foundation Mazsok called recalling Gustav Zoltai from a position due to his new assignment as advisor to the government “unprecedented.”

Gyorgy Szabo spoke to MTI after the Budapest Dohany Street Jewish community recalled Zoltai from his presidential post in the community in response to Zoltai’s accepting the recent assignment from Janos Lazar, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, to work as their advisor.

Lazar asked Zoltai, the former head of the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities (Mazsihisz), to advise the government from September on matters of dispute with the Jewish community.

Szabo said it would have been an “irresponsible act” to reject the government’s call when it seeks to have advise from someone with extensive experience in Hungarian Jewish matters.

He praised Zoltai for his “exceptional” knowledge of Hungary’s Jewish community.
