Jobbik says soldiers may be needed to protect border
Budapest, August 24 (MTI) – The option of deploying soldiers to protect Hungary’s border against the influx of migrants should be examined, the radical nationalist Jobbik party said on Monday.
Citing recent developments at the Greek-Macedonian border, Janos Volner, the party’s deputy leader, said police were barely able to control the crowd of migrants. Hungary’s police, he added, may find it hard to protect the border from illegal migrants “who are becoming more and more aggressive”.
“We don’t want Hungary to end up in a similar position,” Volner said.
He said the constitution allowed for the army to be deployed within the country’s territory if necessary, without the need to declare a state of emergency.
Asked about recent remarks by Fidesz lawmaker Imre Pesti that the idea of introducing mandatory screening and inoculation for migrants should be considered, Volner said that if refugee camps were sealed, asylum-seekers could not move about freely and the risk to public health would decrease.
