Poles want change, says ambassador in Budapest

Budapest, May 25 (MTI) – People in Poland want change, the Polish ambassador to Hungary said on Monday, after the victory of opposition politician Andrzej Duda in the Polish presidential elections.

Although Poland has performed successfully above the European average in several areas, there have been problems as well, such as low wages and unemployment, Roman Kowalski told public news channel M1 on Monday.

It is also partly a generational issue, the majority of voters preferred the younger candidate in hope that he could be more responsive to current problems, the ambassador said.

The president is elected directly in Poland and has a strong mandate which includes the power of vetoing laws and directly overseeing security policy and the armed forces, he said.

“These have regrettably become rather important issues in Europe, and outside the continent,” the ambassador said.

He said major changes could be expected in economic and social areas, with special regard to cooperation with the EU.
