Police set up new migrant camp by Kiskunhalas
Budapest, June 27 (MTI) – Hungary’s immigration services have set up a new camp for migrants entering the country just outside Kiskunhalas, in southern Hungary, MTI’s correspondent reported from the site.
The tents erected on an area of 200 by 200 metres at the site of a former barracks were standing by Saturday morning.
The tents will have a capacity to accommodate about 1,000 migrants who had been placed under a 24-hour arrest for illegal entry to the country. It is here that the migrants will be registered and the decision on whether they would file an asylum request or whether police proceedings would be launched against them is made.
Police in the border town of Roszke, in the south, told MTI on Saturday that the migrants housed in camps near the border with Serbia are looked after and “provisions are satisfactory”. Any press reports which suggest otherwise are simply “media hysteria”, police said in a statements.
Police said altogether 1,087 illegal entrants, including 159 children, were stopped at the border with Serbia on Friday.
Meanwhile the lawmaker for the constituency of Bicske, the site of Hungary’s largest refugee camp just west of Budapest, said local residents want to restore pre-2012 rules and limit the movement of migrants by sealing off camps. Zoltan Tessely (Fidesz) said the government should introduce further tightening measures for illegal migration besides the promised fence at the border, which the residents of Bicske welcome.
He said the camp in Bicske has a capacity to hold 350 people, lowered from an earlier 462, yet there are about 1,100 people staying there. Tessely welcomed the result of talks in Brussels that Prime Minister Viktor Orban had conducted on Friday.
In the course of an EU summit ending on Friday Hungary and Bulgaria have been given exemptions from a voluntary agreement on sharing 60,000 migrants. “What is in the text protects and serves the interests of the Hungarian people,” Orban said on Friday, pledging that Hungary would still build a fence on its southern border to curb illegal entry.
