Brussels (MTI) – Although there is no consensus within the European Union concerning a solution to the migration crisis, members seem to agree that the community’s external borders should be defended through setting up a common border guard, Zsolt Nemeth, head of the foreign affairs committee of the Hungarian parliament, told MTI in Brussels on Tuesday.
Speaking after a meeting of the European Parliament’s foreign affairs committee (AFET), Nemeth stressed that Europe’s unity should be maintained “among all circumstances”. Participants in the meeting agreed that Europe’s unity could only be preserved if a broad consensus is reached concerning the migration crisis, with special regard to the migrant quotas, Nemeth said.
Members of the EU generally agree that the global migration crisis calls for a global solution, Nemeth said. He added it was important that the EU, Russia, and the US are now jointly seeking ways to stop the war in Syria. He said it was now “evident” that if the international community acted against the Syrian president, the whole country could soon go to the Islamic State terrorist organisation.
Concerning the enlargement of the EU, Nemeth noted the focus on countries in the Western Balkans. He said accession talks with those countries have been given new impetus, and voiced hope that it would be manifested in an acceleration of the integration process.
